Stop Stereotyping
Today in my english class a student was trying to describe the features of the subsitute to our english teacher because he didn’t remember his name. The student began by saying, “he could get a wave in his hair”. Then I went, “he didn’t have hair”. The student continue, “If he did have hair he would be able to get a wave”. The teacher didn’t know what that was nor what the student was trying to explain. Before he could continue again another student just blurts out, “He was black”. The first student said, “woah woah. I was trying to avoid that terminology”. There are only 2 black people in that class, me and some kid that is never here, so mostly just me. I was fine when he said, “He was black”. It is not a bad word. I was not ok with the other kids explanation. He was stereotyping black people and that is not right. Because he thought black was some type of bad word.
